Governor
Sanford Makes Trip To Lowcountry To Help Berkeley County Chamber Of
Commerce Celebrate 30th Anniversary
(GOOSE
CREEK, SC)
Over
250 members of the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce (BCOC) embraced the
opportunity to hear Governor Sanford's special address on Friday, March
16th in celebration of BCOC's 30th Anniversary. Sanford welcomed the
crowd and immediately began thanking Berkeley County business leaders.
He then stressed the importance of the people of Berkeley County making
their voices heard. Sanford stated that he is pushing for changes in
government structure and looking for ways to, "get more out of what
we've got." He noted that South Carolina led the Southeast in spending
for the last two years. He encouraged people to "get involved" and
"start making noise about how much is spent in Columbia" Governor
Sanford acknowledged that the Workman's Compensation system in the
state "is broken". He indicated that we must get to that point (of
making our voices heard) today if we want to see Workman's Compensation
reform next year. Gov. Sanford also addressed the increased tax cuts,
initiatives to help small businesses pool together to purchase health
insurance, and the importance of DUI reform.
"It's encouraging to see that Governor
Sanford is actively
addressing these important issues and encouraging the people to get
involved," states Berkeley County Councilman and incoming President of
the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce Caldwell Pinckney, Jr., "it's
important for all people to know and understand
that their voice can be heard and that their opinion is not only
important, but necessary."
Another highlight of the afternoon included
Patty Platt of Roper St.
Francis Hospital being awarded the 2007 Distinguished Community Service
Award in recognition of her continued volunteer efforts and dedication
to the community.
Outgoing BCOC President Dick Gregory
concluded the afternoon by
handing the "President" gavel to Caldwell Pinckney, Jr. "I'm very
excited about helping the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce continue to move
forward," states Pinckney, "We had an incredible year last year. We've
redesigned our website, produced a high quality magazine and increased
our overall marketing efforts. The fruits of our hard work are paying
off, and we plan to continue down this positive path."
