Higher Education

Berkeley County is proud to have a number of nationally recognized, quality higher education options easily accessible to residents. Schools offering numerous Ph.D’s, Masters Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, specialized certificate and personal enrichment programs for all ages are either located within Berkeley County or just a short drive away.

Charleston Southern University  (website)

Charleston Southern University (CSU) is one of South Carolina’s largest accredited, independent universities. Affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the University’s mission is promoting academic excellence in a Christian environment.  CSU has earned the distinction of being named to the John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll of Character Building Colleges. CSU has also been listed as one of America’s 100 Best College Buys.  CSU’s vision is to be a Christian university nationally recognized for integrating faith in learning, leading and serving. CSU awards bachelor’s and master’s degrees and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, offering more than 30 undergraduate majors and three graduate programs in:

College of Charleston  (website)

The College of Charleston (COC) is a nationally recognized, public liberal arts and sciences university. Founded in 1770, the COC is among the nation’s top universities for quality education, student life and affordability. COC offers a distinctive combination of a beautiful and historic campus, modern facilities and cutting-edge programs. Students from all 50 states and some 68 countries choose COC for its small-college feel blended with the advantages and diversity of an urban, mid-sized university. The College provides a creative and intellectually stimulating environment where students are challenged by a committed and caring faculty of 500 distinguished teacher-scholars, all in an incomparable setting. Students can select from 46 different majors ranging from art history to elementary education to urban studies, and choose to pursue a minor in any of 80 different areas, from business administration to meteorology to Russian studies. Additionally, the College offers 24 interdisciplinary minors wherein courses from different academic disciplines are selected to provide a unique, comprehensive understanding of a given area of study.

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)  (website)

As South Carolina's only comprehensive academic health center providing a full range of programs in the biomedical sciences, the Medical University of South Carolina is engaged in activities statewide. Its campus is located on more than 50 acres in the city of Charleston. More than 2,400 students take courses of study in six colleges:

Degrees are offered at the baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and other professional levels. The University also provides residency training for over 500 graduate health professionals. The teaching staff is comprised of approximately 1,200 full-time and 150 part-time faculty.

The Citadel  (website)

The Citadel is a landmark in Charleston and South Carolina that is noted for its educational reputation as well as its rich history. Founded in 1842, The Citadel has an undergraduate student body of about 2,000 students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Another 1,000 students attend The Citadel Graduate College, a civilian evening program that offers graduate and professional as well as undergraduate programs. The Citadel is best known nationally for its Corps of Cadets which draws students from about 40 states and a dozen countries. The men and women in the Corps live and study under a classical military system that makes leadership and character training an essential part of the educational experience. About a third of the graduating classes accept military commissions. The Citadel is divided into five academic schools:

Webster University is dedicated to academic excellence, innovation in higher education, meeting students’ needs in an ever-changing world and incorporating an international perspective throughout the curriculum. Students can choose from programs in the schools of:
